Tips for fighting off a UTI
1 min read
Antibiotics are usually the most common way to treat a urinary tract infection (UTI) because they kill the bacteria that cause the infection.
That said, some mild UTIs often clear up on their own.
If you want to try to fight off a UTI without taking antibiotics, there are things you can do to help increase your chances.
Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water to dilute your urine and flush out bacteria before the infection takes hold.
Take paracetamol or ibuprofen to alleviate any pain or discomfort.
Practise good hygiene. Have daily showers, gently washing your genitals with unperfumed, skin-sensitive soap. Avoid baths until your UTI symptoms ease because exposing your genitals to the chemicals in your cleaning products can make the situation worse.
Go to the toilet as soon as you feel the urge. Don’t hold it in, and wipe from front to back.
Consume foods containing vitamin C. Cranberry juice or cranberry tablets and probiotics may help to reduce inflammation and bacteria in your body, thus alleviating symptoms. You can also try natural remedies, such as Cymalon, Uva-ursi and Azo Urinary Pain Relief.
