A UTI, or urinary tract infection, is an infection in any part of the urinary system. It can affect the bladder, urethra or kidneys.
UTIs, sometimes referred to as cystitis, occur when bacteria such as e-coli enter the urinary system.
UTIs are extremely common, especially in women. One in two women will experience at least one UTI in their lifetime. The female anatomy, specifically a shorter urethra, makes it easy for bacteria to travel from the gastrointestinal tract into the bladder.
While symptoms can be extremely uncomfortable, the good news is that most UTIs are easy to treat. In many cases, a short course of antibiotics can resolve the symptoms and underlying infection.
