Painful bladder syndrome
Reviewed by Dr Jonah Mink, April 21'30 sec read
Painful bladder syndrome is also known as interstitial cystitis. This condition is not yet very well understood, and a variety of theories exist to explain the cause of pain. Affecting women more commonly than men, it may be a result of inflammation within the bladder wall and can be triggered by a previous UTI, physical or emotional stress, weakness within the pelvic floor muscles or an allergic reaction.
Treatment protocols begin with lifestyle modification including relaxation techniques and efforts to reduce stress levels. If required, over-the-counter and prescribed medications may also be recommended, alongside physiotherapy or even surgical procedures.
